Tientos de la Bahía (Flamenco Guitar)

Tientos de la Bahía (tientos). Composed & performed by Paco Peña.

The tientos is a 4/4 style of flamenco that has its roots in another flamenco style called the tanguillo de Cádiz which originated in the mid-1800s in the province of Cádiz, Spain. The tanguillo is a fast, polyrhythmic musical form that combines 2/4, 3/4, and 6/8 meters. The tientos is identical to the tanguillo rhythmically but much slower (i.e., 70-90 BPM) and written in the Spanish Phrygian mode rather than in the major or minor keys in which the tanguillos were originally written. Like almost all flamenco forms, the tientos was (and still is) predominantly a style for guitar and voice. Here Paco Peña performs a very traditional instrumental version.
