Recuerdos & Gitanos Andaluces

Recuerdos. Composed by Eduardo Díaz (Mexico) & Performed by Vladimir Druzhinin.

Eduardo Díaz is an active composer and classical guitarist who began performing at age 15. He has composed numerous works for guitar, several of which have been played and recorded by internationally recognized artists. The piece for today is a highly expressive piece and the performer, Druzhinin, does an incredible job interpreting the work. Please pay close attention to his tempo and dynamic variation along with his changes in tone (color).

Gitanos Andaluces (bulería). Composed and performed by Paco de Lucia (1947-2014, Spain).

You may remember from previous posts that the bulería is one of the most popular styles in flamenco. If you find yourself at a party in Spain surrounded by flamenco musicians and dancers, this is the style you’ll hear from midnight to breakfast non-stop. As you can see in this video, bulerías are fast-paced, high-energy, and lots of fun. They are traditionally written in the Spanish Phrygian mode and have a complex rhythm (i.e., “compás) that can change depending on the variation of bulería played. You’ll hear bulería rhythms that emphasize 3s, 6s, or 12s but in general, bulerías have an underlying 12-beat rhythmic cycle that can sometimes be extended by 6 beats. This bulería by Paco de Lucía is one of the most iconic in flamenco and is considered a standard in the flamenco guitar repertoire.
