The zapateado — “percussive footwork” in Spanish — is another style in the flamenco genre. Musically, the zapateado has its origins in the pre-flamenco “tanguillo” (or Tanguillo de Cádiz) which was originally a style of music with singing that was (and still is) a staple of Spain’s annual Carnaval festival. The main difference between the two styles is that the tanguillo is traditionally for voice and guitar (i.e., no dance) and the zapateado is for dance and guitar (ie., no singing). Currently, the zapateado is not performed frequently by dancers anymore. Instead, it has become part of flamenco’s solo guitar repertoire as is seen here in Paco de Lucía’s performance.
