Libertango & Monasterio de Sal

Updated: Jun 8, 2022

Libertango (Astor Piazzolla) performed & arranged by Stas Karpenko. This is another one of Piazzolla's most famous tangos written in 1974. The title is a combination of the words "Libertad" (freedom) and "Tango" which refers to Piazzolla's break from classical Argentinian tango to a more contemporary tango. Libertango was originally written for a full instrumental jazz ensemble.

Monasterio de Sal (Colombianas) composed & performed by Paco de Lucía -- 2nd guitar by Juan Manuel Cañizares. The "colombianas" is a 4/4 style in the flamenco genre that belongs to the flamenco tango family. Accents are typically on 2 & 4 and they are usually written in a major key using a IV-V7-I progression. Paco's version is a very contemporary colombians that was written in 1981. It set the stage for future contemporary versions of colombians that explored richer harmonies and phrasing.
