FLAMENCO & CLASSICAL GUITAR
How My Lessons Are Different
To begin with, I truly love teaching. It's a really wonderful feeling to help students enjoy the guitar and play it well. With that in mind, my goals as a teacher are to make sure my students sound good, improve quickly, and have fun. And to accomplish these goals, I don't think it's enough to simply show students techniques and music. Instead, I think it's essential to teach and coach everything that encompasses playing the guitar using a structured method that covers basic mechanics, musical material, expressive techniques, practice strategies, performance strategies, and practical music theory.
In each of my lessons, I provide the following material:
-
A customized practice plan updated in each lesson.
-
An email summary of important lesson material, notes, corrections, suggestions, & science-based practice strategies.
-
PDFs and/or audio files of exercises, etudes, falsetas, repertoire, harmony, and/or music theory.
-
Video recordings of new material and/or breakdowns of challenge spots ("CSs").
-
Between Lessons: Students are encouraged to email me if there are questions about lesson material before the next lesson to make sure that practice is correct.
Improvement Expectations
My primary emphasis for lessons is to teach effective practice strategies so that you can improve safely, quickly, and correctly. Noticeable improvement is a result of consistency, relaxation, patience, precision, maximum mental effort (MME) & minimal physical effort (MPE) over time. It will not be noticeable in just a few days or even in a couple of weeks.

Injury Policy
There are 6 main reasons musicians get injured: 1) playing too hard, 2) practicing too much, 3) being in a hurry to improve, 4) improper posture, 5) anxiety, and 6) worrying, or beating yourself up, about errors.
Above all else, I emphasize safe & efficient practice strategies focused on preventing injury. It is extremely important to be patient with your progress and to play with as much relaxation as possible in your hands, fingers, arms, wrists, body AND mind. Listen to your body for signs of anxiety, excess tension, discomfort, pain, and/or fatigue when playing/practicing and stop immediately to address these signs even if the recommended or desired practice time has not been reached.
Neither I (Diego Alonso), Diego Alonso Music, the Spanish Guitar Mastery Program, Sonanta LLC, or any affiliates shall be held responsible for any student's repetitive stress or guitar-related injuries.
